Letters of Recommendation

TeacherThese letters are prepared by others and demonstrate knowledge of you and your activities. The best recommendation letters endorse your likelihood to succeed in college and cast you as an ideal student to college application reviewers.

Who To Ask
  • Teachers: Select teachers in core subjects who know you and the quality of your work well. Many colleges prefer teachers from your junior year.
  • Counselors
  • Coaches
  • Clergy
  • Any non-family authority figure

The individuals you ask should know you well and be able to attest to your accomplishments and character.

When To Ask

You should request a recommendation letter after you have submitted your application.

Help Them Help You

Provide your letter writers with some written information about yourself to help them.

  • Intended major
  • Career goals
  • Why you wish to study a certain subject
  • Coursework that has prepared you for college
  • Extracurriculars
  • Major achievements

Be Considerate of Time

Give writers plenty of time to complete the letters of recommendation. Also, be sure to provide your letter writers with any applicable information, such as the mailing address, especially if they need to mail the letters directly to the college or university you are applying to.

Students who have established a history of UNHS course completions may request a recommendation letter from the academic advisers at unhsadviser@nebraska.edu or from the teachers at unhsteach@nebraska.edu. Please allow 7 to 10 business days for completion of the letter. The letter will be mailed directly to the college or be included with the application submission.
