High school students are encouraged to pursue internships. Especially for UNHS students, internships don’t have to be just for the summer months. The flexibility of distance and online learning creates time for year-round interning.
Benefits of Internships
- Build confidence
- Gain skills
- Learn how to job search
- Explore potential careers and programs of study
- See how professional organizations operate
- Network and build relationships
Where to Intern
Internships are available with large and small businesses and corporations such as:
- Local newspapers
- Non-profit organizations
- Business associations
For formal internships programs, check company websites. You can also ask people you know about their careers, and if their places of work have any internship opportunities. Finally, search online.
Once you find an opportunity you would like to pursue, prepare a one-page resume and a one-page cover letter. The resume should include:
- Contact information
- Goal for the internship
- Extracurricular activities (volunteerism, athletics, etc.)
- Previous work experience
As for your cover letter, you should share why you are specifically interested in the internship you are applying for or suggesting. This is an opportunity to show the reader your knowledge and interest, so don’t be too general. If you are applying for several internships, you should end up with several cover letters.
