Core subjects (English, math, science, social studies and world languages) are an important indication that you have learned all you can throughout your time in high school and college. They are in place to give you a well-rounded education and offer a plethora of helpful skills that will aid you in your future classes. The successful completion of core subjects lets colleges know that you are ready for the demands of college-level learning. It is important to learn a little about each subject and what skills they offer.

English

English classes can help you to build your vocabulary as well as communicate effectively and confidently. This is why it is important for you to study literature and composition every academic year.

  • The UNHS 9th and 10th Grade English courses combine literature with grammar and usage, writing organization skills, research skills and reading comprehension.
  • The 11th and 12th Grade English courses include American Literature and British Literature to help prepare you for college-level learning in reading comprehension, writing and vocabulary.

Math

More math = more benefits for students. ACT research shows that students who participate in a rigorous curriculum in 8th grade will be more ready to meet the college readiness benchmarks and career preparations upon graduation. Many colleges expect three years of college preparatory math, but more competitive universities will require four years.

The UNHS college preparatory math sequence includes:

  1. First Year Algebra
  2. Geometry
  3. Advanced Algebra
  4. Pre-calculus
  5. And just for fun, AP Calculus!

Science

If the world and how it works sparks your interest, then you know why science is an important core subject. Not only can it be entertaining, but it teaches you to use analytical thinking skills and apply scientific theories to the world around us. College admissions typically require three years with two years of labs; competitive colleges will require four years preferably with labs.

The UNHS proper sequence is:

  1. Physical and Earth Science
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Physics

The courses are logically paired with the math sequence beginning with First Year Algebra. The critical thinking and problem solving skills learned in the corresponding math courses are applied in the science courses.

Social Studies

Studying history and different cultures helps you to understand worldly events and become more globally and civically competent.

The UNHS college prep sequence advises:

  1. World Geography
  2. World History
  3. American History
  4. American Government

The UNHS Social Studies curriculum seeks to make learning wider than history with the UNHS courses:

  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Economics
  • AP Comparative Government and International Relations.

World Language

The UNHS world language courses (French, Spanish, Latin and Chinese) will show colleges that you are willing to study courses that are academically challenging. To complete a third or fourth year of the same world language will demonstrate academic self-discipline and set you apart from your peers.

As you pursue your education, UNHS recommends you follow the college preparatory option presented on the website. Completing this type of course study should help to ensure that you have the proper academic background to meet admission requirements at fine universities. The magic of the core classes is that every subject creates unique learning opportunities. So enjoy those math or science classes—their completion can lead to amazing things!
