In this article, we will focus on leadership.
Independent learning is an excellent way for students to develop leadership skills. Though working alone, students learn the importance of self-advocacy, organization and responsibility. Your success is determined by your willingness to work hard and engage in your studies.
We have written before about how you can learn to work in a group when you are in college, but now it is time to learn how to lead that group, so you are prepared when you enter work.
To be a leader you step up and take charge while still maintaining a positive relationship with your group members. This doesn’t mean you have to be the most vocal, it means that you are reliable and willing to assist where needed. Good leaders are willing to:
- Define the goal or “end product"
- Determine the steps needed to attain the goal
- Execute the steps
- Celebrate others successes
- Recognize their own weaknesses
- Delegate
- Keep others focused
In considering the type of leader you would like to be, look for examples you admire. These may be famous individuals, members of your community or a parent or teacher. Learn more about that person—what is it about him or her that displays leadership? Famous individuals often have biographies you can read. For the leaders you know, ask them:
- How did they grow in their leadership skills?
- What advice would they have for you?
All UNHS diploma students are automatically student council members through the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), but students are encouraged to complete the Student Leaders Program within this organization. The program challenges students who are looking to enhance their leadership skills.
